We're looking for a:
HR Lead / Community Lead / Duty Manager
Location: BlocHaus Climbing LTD, Openshaw, Manchester, UK.
Contract Type: Full-time or Part-time
Start Date: Immediate
Pay Rate: £14.21 – £15.21 per hour (dependent on qualifications and experience)
We’re looking for an organised, people-focused and proactive individual with HR experience to join our team at BlocHaus Climbing.
This is a varied, hands-on role that combines responsibility for HR processes, people systems and staff support with Duty Manager shifts in a busy and growing bouldering centre.
It’s an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys building strong teams and processes, while still wanting to be actively involved in the day-to-day running of a business.
About Us
Blochaus Climbing is an independent bouldering wall in Manchester, focused on creating a welcoming environment for everyone; from first-time climbers to experienced regulars.
We take pride in our route setting, customer experience, and the overall atmosphere in the centre, and we’re always looking to improve what we do.
The Role
This role sits at the centre of how the business runs from a people and organisational perspective.
You will take ownership of core HR and people processes, helping to ensure the team is well-supported, well-structured and aligned with the needs of the business.
You will be responsible for supporting recruitment, onboarding, staff wellbeing, employee records and people processes, while also helping managers with communication, performance and team development.
Alongside this, you will take on regular Duty Manager shifts, helping lead the safe and efficient day-to-day running of the centre.
As a small business, this role requires someone who is happy to get involved across multiple areas and enjoys a varied working day.
Key Responsibilities
Manage and maintain HR processes including recruitment, onboarding and employee records
Support all stages of the employee lifecycle, from recruitment through to exit processes
Act as the first point of contact for staff HR queries and provide day-to-day people support
Support employee wellbeing, absence management and general staff welfare
Coordinate performance reviews, return to work meetings and people administration
Support managers with disciplinary, grievance and performance processes where required
Ensure policies, procedures and employment records are maintained and up to date
Develop and improve internal systems, processes and standard operating procedures
Support staff communication, training and organisational planning
Duty Manager Responsibilities
Lead shifts and support the safe and efficient day-to-day running of the centre
Open and close the centre
Support reception and instructor teams
Deliver a high level of customer service and support customers on-site
Carry out front of house duties, including check-ins and serving food and drink
Ensure operational standards, daily checks and cleaning tasks are completed
Act as a point of reference for operational procedures and staff support during shifts
Provide first aid support where required
What We're Looking For
Experience in an HR, people, administration or office management role
Good understanding of HR processes and employment-related procedures
Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
Confident communication skills and the ability to work with a range of people
Able to take ownership of tasks and see them through to completion
Comfortable balancing HR responsibilities with practical, operational work
Reliable, approachable and able to maintain confidentiality
Willingness to work a mix of daytime, evening and weekend shifts
A practical attitude and willingness to get stuck in
Desirable (not essential):
Previous experience in a climbing centre, gym, hospitality or similar customer-facing environment
Experience writing or improving policies, SOPs or internal systems
CIPD qualification or working towards one
Experience with recruitment, wellbeing initiatives or staff development
Experience with social media, community engagement or events
First Aid qualification

Basic Info
3 to 5 days per week (22.5 to 37.5 hours)
£14.21 to £15.21 per hour, depending on experience and suitability for the additional responsibilities.
28 days holiday per year (pro rata)
